Motivational Interview (MI): The Key to Long-term, Science-Based Behavior Change
/Motivational interviewing (MI) is a client-centered counseling technique designed to understand and strengthen a person’s internal motivation towards behavior change.
In nutrition counseling, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) use MI to help clients explore values, compassionately understand their own ambivalence, build confidence in their capabilities, and create realistic goals that matter most to the client.
Rather than directing, lecturing, or “telling people what to do,” the RDN guides the conversation through the lens of seeing the best in the client. MI is best executed with patience, compassion, empathy, reflective listening, affirmations, and open-ended questions. Additional techniques include asking permission before offering education, exploring barriers without judgment, and helping clients identify their own reasons for change.
Research indicates the application of MI to consultation settings to help improve adherence and long-term behavior change outcomes. Studies have shown MI to help clients across the board, at all ages, thrive in their fitness goals, weight goals, and in efficiently making dietary changes as a lifestyle versus a temporary diet.
MI is particularly effective in nutrition counseling because dietary change is often emotional, complex, and influenced by habits, culture, stress, and readiness for change. As a result, RDNs commonly apply MI when supporting individuals with diabetes, eating disorders, weight management concerns, gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular disease, and pediatric feeding challenges.
As healthcare continues shifting toward patient-centered care, motivational interviewing remains an essential counseling framework for RDNs. By fostering collaboration instead of control, MI empowers clients to make sustainable nutrition changes while strengthening the therapeutic relationship between dietitian and patient.
